What is Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?
The tummy tuck is designed to reshape the abdomen by removing excess fatty tissue and loose, sagging skin and tightening the abdominal muscles. Who is a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery?
Good candidates for the abdominoplasty are patients who have exercise- and diet-resistant accumulations of fat and sagging skin and/or abdominal muscles that have been weakened by age or pregnancy. In fact, women who have had one or more pregnancies are often ideal candidates for tummy tuck surgery. Tummy tuck patients must be in good physical health to tolerate the procedure. The Procedure
Tummy tuck surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia and can last from two to five hours. During surgery, an incision is made from one hip to the other, just above the pubic line. A second incision is made around the belly button. Next, the skin is separated from the abdominal wall and the muscles are tightened and stitched in their new position. Excess fat and skin is removed and stitched into place.
What is the recovery like from a tummy tuck?
The side effects of the surgery include temporary swelling, bruising and numbness of the abdominal wall. Most y patients are up and walking one day after surgery, but generally require two to three weeks of intense recovery before returning to work. We advise against heavy lifting or vigorous activity for approximately six weeks after surgery.
