What is a body lift

Post-weight loss body contouring, or body lift surgery, isn’t a single procedure, but rather a group of procedures that are particularly useful after significant weight loss to tone, tighten, and eliminate excess skin. Your Artisan plastic surgeon will discuss your concerns with you and help you determine a surgical plan that best suits your needs.

Am I a good candidate for a body lift?

Actual Artisan Patient

We love it when our patients say they feel confident showing off their natural, unique beauty. Real patient stories

While each patient has their own unique goals, in general, body contouring procedures focus on addressing stretched or sagging tissues, rather than excess fat. The best candidates are patients who have achieved their desired goal weight and kept their weight stable for at least six months.

It’s also important to be aware that many body contouring procedures require longer scars, which can be hidden by most clothing, but may be visible in certain swimwear or when naked. Most patient find scars to be well worth it to get rid of excess, sagging skin. Your surgeon will explain the details of the procedures you are considering, including scar patterns, during a consultation.

Your post-weight loss body lift procedure options

Our Atlanta plastic surgeons will personalize your post-weight loss body contouring plan to your needs. Whenever possible, they will combine multiple procedures to achieve your goals during a single operation. In some cases, it is preferable to divide your plan into two or more surgeries. Below are the most common procedures our post-weight loss patients choose.

Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

Following weight loss, many patients not only have excess skin, but stretched, loose abdominal muscles too, as they lose visceral fat from behind the abdominal wall. A tummy tuck can address both issues in a single procedure, restoring a firmer, flatter abdomen and eliminating excess skin. We will often combine a tummy tuck with abdominal liposuction to achieve the most natural contours and a beautiful waistline.

Upper arm lift

Loose sagging skin on the upper arms can be corrected with an upper arm lift, also called brachioplasty. This procedure removes excess skin and fat through an incision on the underside of the upper arm, restoring a firmer, more slender arm shape and helping patients feel more comfortable and confident in sleeveless clothing.

Thigh lift

A thigh lift removes excess, sagging skin from the front, back and/or inner thighs as well as lifts and tones underlying tissues. It is one of the most effective options to address pooling skin around the knees and help patients feel more comfortable and confident in their clothing. Scars are typically located in the groin, or in the buttock crease, along the natural swimsuit bottom line. Our plastic surgeons can combine a thigh lift with a buttock lift for more comprehensive results.

Lower body lift

A lower body lift combines a tummy tuck with a thigh and buttock lift to remove excess skin and tighten sagging tissues between the midsection and thighs. This is a common procedure option for patients who have lost a great deal of weight and have an “apron” of skin hanging from the lower body.

One of the more extensive procedures, a lower body lift requires 3 to 4 weeks of recovery before returning to work and many normal activities. The resulting scar typically runs around the circumference of the body, although our plastic surgeons try to place the scar as low as possible so that it can concealed by underwear or swimsuits if possible.

Facelift

Did you know that one of the fastest growing groups of facelift patients are younger, post-weight loss patients? That’s because a facelift is one of the most effective ways to address sagging skin on the lower face and neck—a common effect of massive weight loss. Through small incisions concealed behind the hairline and in the natural contours of the ears, your plastic surgeon will lift and reposition sagging tissues in the cheeks and lower face, and then remove any excess skin to eliminate jowls and restore a smoother, tighter face and neck.
