Liposuction Surgery in Atlanta
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that has been used in the United States for almost 20 years to remove localized collections of fatty tissue. Many people, despite diet and discipline, are prone to specific areas of excess fatty tissue that is resistant to exercise. Liposuction can be used safely to contour your hips and thighs, arms, abdomen, knees, buttocks, back, and even the chin and neck. The entire procedure is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions. With sensible diet and exercise after the surgery, the results from the surgery are permanent.
Who is a good candidate for this procedure?
Good candidates for liposuction are men and women who are of average weight for their height, but have specific areas of extra fat. The procedure is most effective in patients who have healthy, elastic skin. If you have excess skin, you may require an additional procedure such as a tummy tuck to obtain the desired results. After carefully evaluating your areas of concern, our surgeons will help you determine whether liposuction is right for you. It is important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure; rather, the treatment allows our liposuction surgeons to sculpt and shape your body, thereby helping you achieve a more balanced and attractive body figure.
What does the liposuction procedure involve?
Liposuction surgery involves the use of a thin surgical tube (called a cannula) that is inserted into the skin via small incisions to loosen and vacuum out unwanted fat deposits. Depending on the size of the treatment area and the amount of fat to be removed, liposuction can be performed under general or local anesthesia.
How does standard liposuction differ from laser liposuction (“SlimLipo”)?
The basic procedure is the same, but SlimLipo uses a special laser tool that liquifies the unwanted fat so that it is easier to remove through the cannula. The tool also help control bleeding, which can help speed up the post-operative healing process.
What is the recovery like from this procedure?
Side effects from the surgery include bruising, swelling, and numbness. Depending on the extent of the surgery, most patients resume their normal routine in one to two weeks. We generally recommend waiting three to four weeks before resumption of vigorous exercise. Full recovery from the swelling and bruising may take one to three months.
Immediately after surgery, our patients are provided with detailed aftercare instructions and mild painkillers, if necessary. To minimize swelling and facilitate healing, you may be asked to wear compression garments for a few days. Compression garments also help tighten your skin after liposuction surgery. Before you leave our practice, we will give you an idea of when you may expect a full recovery, depending on the nature of your custom liposuction treatment.
In addition to treating thigh liposuction patients, the surgeons of Artisan Plastic Surgery have also helped many tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and thigh/buttock lift patients. Please visit these pages to learn more about the other body contouring procedures offered.
